Course Title: Strategies for Empowering Students to Become Active, Responsible Learners (Accompanies On Course I Workshop) Offered Fall Semester only.

Course Description: This course focuses on practical strategies for empowering college students to become active, responsible learners. Participants in this course will learn a variety of highly effective learner-centered methods that not only appeal to various learning styles but also motivate students to take charge of their own learning. These methods are drawn from best practices in psychology, education, business, sports, and personal effectiveness.  Additionally, participants learn to apply the seven domains of influence by which educators can guide students to achieve their greatest potential. This course is appropriate for college faculty from all academic disciplines, instructors of college success courses, counselors, student affairs staff, TRIO personnel, and administrators seeking strategies for improving retention and student success rates. (3 Credits)

Course Objectives: Students in this course will…

A. Learn and implement proven strategies for empowering students to become active, responsible learners who are self-motivated, self-managing, interdependent, self-aware, emotionally intelligent, and self-confident.

B. Learn and implement effective learner-centered strategies. These strategies will fall into one or more of the seven domains available to educators for influencing the stated and collateral learning of students: 1) College and Classroom activities, 2) Assignments, 3) Evaluation and Feedback, 4) Modeling, 5) Environment, 6) Policies and Rules, and 7) Programs and Curricula.

C. Engage in a discussion-board conversation with classmates, exploring and evaluating the effectiveness of their implementation of learner-centered educational practices for empowering college students.

D. Become part of an international community of many thousands of college educators (via the On Course Internet Newsletter) exchanging best practices for improving academic success and student retention.

E. Publish for an international community of many thousands of college educators (via the On Course Internet Newsletter) their experiences and outcomes of implementing learner-centered educational strategies for empowering students.

Course Requirements: Successful students in this course must…

1. Attend an On Course I Workshop in its entirety (21 hours).  Dates and locations for all On Course Workshops are posted at http://www.OnCourseWorkshop.com.

2.  Read the text On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life (most recent edition.) by Skip Downing and the accompanying facilitator’s manual (Houghton Mifflin). Complete Journal Entries 1-10 and submit them to the instructor.

3.  Implement for students at their college two learning-centered strategies presented at the On Course Workshop or found in the facilitator’s manual for the text On Course, write separate Project Reports about the implementation of each strategy, and submit each report separately to the course instructor for posting on Blackboard.

4.  Implement for students at their college one learning-centered strategy that they design or that they learn from a source other than the On Course Workshop, book, or facilitator’s manual; write a description of the strategy and its implementation; and submit the Project Report to the course instructor for posting on Blackboard.

5. Give helpful feedback about all Project Reports posted on the Blackboard by their Project Team members.

Attend an On Course I Workshop in its entirety (21 hours). Recommended: Attend the 3-hour optional session.

 

Write and submit to the course instructor a Schedule of Personally Chosen Deadlines for the Ten Journal Entries and Three Project Reports. All assignments must be completed by the end of the semester. Follow the guidelines provided by the instructor.

 

Write and post on your Blackboard home page a Personal Introduction.
