On Course – Music

MUSIC

Back to Table of Contents for the On Course I Workshop

1. Strategy: The Jigsaw

Application: Music

Educator: Daniel Corr, Faculty, Music, Housatonic Community College, CT

Implementation: The jigsaw model is the perfect group activity for studying the elements of music, which is the first unit of the typical Music History/Appreciation course.  Two classes before the exam on this unit, assign home groups with four areas of expertise:  melody, harmony, rhythm and texture.  Expert groups meet during the next class so students have ample time to research.  Students then return to home groups and clarify for the other students the basic aspects of these four areas.

Institutional Studies

Read compelling data from twenty seven colleges and universities using the On Course textbook.

These studies demonstrate increases in retention, success and persistence rates as high as 27%.
