On Course – Athletics

ATHLETICS

Back to Table of Contents for the On Course I Workshop

1. Strategy: Responsibility Model

Application: Basketball Team

Educator: David Abderhalden, Head Coach, Chemeketa Community College, OR

Implementation: In sports, challenging situations tend to occur often. Therefore, during weekly team meetings, take time for each player to evaluate any challenging situations s/he may have encountered the previous week either in a game situation, practice, classroom or elsewhere. At this point each athlete briefly describes the situation and reflects on how s/he reacted. Upon identifying their reaction to the challenging situation, they next determine if they responded as a Victim or a Creator. If they determine they were acting in a Victim mindset, they then describe how they could have reacted as a Creator. By continuing this process weekly, they learn their personal patterns and are thus able to create a positive personal change.
