STAY ON COURSE IN A DIVERSE WORLD WORKSHOP

Helping college educators implement On Course principles and practices with culturally diverse students

 

Our learners in higher education carry diverse perceptions and varied ways of creating meaning, and these often differ from those of the educator. The resulting differences create challenges for educators in meeting the needs of all students. In this 2-day workshop, participants have the opportunity to increase their own awareness about concepts related to cultural and learning diversity through discussion and interaction, as well as to identify the conditions and strategies necessary to create relevant and engaging lessons that enable diverse students to learn well together. Participants also explore the use of the On Course success principles and learner-centered instructional strategies to proactively strengthen culturally competent teaching skills. Incorporating equitable best practices honors the cultural experiences of learners, addresses systemic inequities, offers trauma-informed strategic support to learners and promotes greater opportunities for achieving educational success.

Exploring active learning, diversity in learner motivation, creating inclusive learning environments, social identity theory, levels of culture, and cultural archetypes

Developing strategies for identifying and responding to culture shock, and understanding the role of social contingencies in offering equitable educational opportunities

Identifying strategies to limit the negative impacts of microaggressions and mitigating stereotype threat, under-performance, and over efforting

Exploring the formation of implicit bias, neuroscience foundations, impacts of bias, and equity strategies to support virtual learners

Strengthening the capacity to manage racial stress, understanding distinctions of prejudice versus discrimination, and transforming the response paradigm of feelings, behaviors, claims, assumptions and outcomes

Understanding deficit versus asset framing, exploring asset framing strategies, understanding the six forms of cultural capital and how learners might leverage these competences as essential strengths

Exploring the role educators can play in ensuring culturally relevant learning models by integrating diverse forms of cultural wealth into the curriculum
